Family butchers since...

1935

How it all started

How it all started

Brothers Harry and Jim White opened their first shop in Ewell, Surrey, in 1935. Successful pig farmers, they sold the tastiest pork in the county. With a shared passion, they set about creating the best sausage money could buy, using an old family recipe handed down from their father. News of their tasty new sausages (Surrey’s and Traditional Pork) soon spread, and families travelled miles to queue down the street to buy them.

Over the following decades, they continued to make and sell premium pork sausages, and as a play on Jim's passion for pork, his stature, and of course his surname, the name Porky Whites was born.

The 70s and 80s

The family tree begins to grow

The family tree begins to grow

In the early 1970s, Harry and Jim hung up their aprons and Jim’s son, Graham, took over the business. Born and bred on the family's sausages, and every bit as passionate as his father and uncle, there wasn't much Graham didn't know about Porky Whites, and over the next few decades he took their humble family sausage on an impressive journey.

By the turn of the century, another name had been added to the Porky Whites family tree. Former Saturday boy, Chris Price, became Managing Director in the late 1990s. A White in all but name, Chris was already very much part of the family, having joined the company at the age of 13. He’d tried to join when he was 12, but Graham had said he needed to wait a year!

Into the 90s

Our journey takes flight

Our journey takes flight

In 1988, Porky Whites became available in Selfridges Food Hall. From 1990, they were served on Concorde, to British Airway's First Class passengers, and on Virgin Upper Class. In 2002, they became available on most Virgin flights. They also became a favorite among the well–heeled clientele of Fortnum & Mason and Harvey Nichols' food hall, and in 2005, they were served at the wedding of Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles.

By 2008, all three of Graham’s daughters - Carla, Fran and Alix - had joined the business. They had all grown up with Porky Whites, and had worked in the shop with their father and grandfather, learning the tricks of the trade (not many six year olds can hand tie sausages!), so it was a natural step.

The 2000s

Celebrations all round

Celebrations all round

In 2004, Porky Whites launched into their first supermarket, Asda, and they are now stocked by all the major retailers.

In 2009, as demand for Porky Whites grew, the business moved to a new and larger purpose built factory.

2010 was a very special year. Graham White celebrated his 60th birthday and Porky Whites reached its 75th anniversary! To mark this special occasion, a brand new sausage - Roasted Cumin and Garlic - was added to the growing Porky Whites range.

What next?

Looking to the future

Looking to the future

Over the next couple of years, the Porky Whites brand will continue to grow. Our latest flavours, Honey Roast and Bramley Apple, were launched late 2014, and we’re currently working on other exciting ideas, so keep a look out for new varieties in your local supermarket!

Graham’s grandchildren - Isabel, Alexandra, Alanah, William and Rosa - currently enjoy their status as chief tasters. Will they become the fourth generation of the Porky Whites sausage maker’s dynasty? We’ll have to wait and see.
